Pandemic is an Epic Co-Op Tabletop Game

It's cold out there so today we're just going to mope around the house in our pajamas. But no worries here, we certainly won't be bored as this geek family has a basement full of board games for days like today! So today, we play Pandemic!

In Pandemic, several virulent diseases have broken out simultaneously all over the world. Each player is a disease-fighting specialists whose mission is to treat the diseases in breakout spots around the globe while researching cures for each of four plagues before they get out of hand.

Players must work together, playing to their characters’ strengths and planning their strategy of eradication before the diseases overwhelm the world with ever-increasing outbreaks. But the diseases are out breaking fast and time is running out, so the team must try to stem the tide of infection in diseased areas while also towards cures.

Players must work together, playing to their characters’ strengths

In a nutshell, the game board depicts several major population centers on Earth. On each turn, a player can use up to four actions to travel between cities, treat infected populaces, discover a cure, or build a research station. The included deck of cards provides the players with abilities to help fight the diseases, but watch out, because throughout this deck are Epidemic! cards as well that accelerate and intensify the diseases' activity while a second, separate deck of cards controls the "normal" spread of the infections.

You take on a unique role within the team, players must plan their strategy to coordinate with their specialists' team strengths in order to conquer the diseases

For example, the Operations Expert can build research stations which are needed to find cures for the diseases and which allow for greater mobility between cities; the Scientist needs only four cards of a particular disease to cure it instead of the normal five—but the diseases are spreading quickly and time is running out. If one or more diseases spreads beyond recovery or if too much time elapses, the players all lose. If they cure the four diseases, they all win!

In our version, the new 2013 edition of Pandemic, it includes two new characters called the Contingency Planner and the Quarantine Specialist. The Quarantine Specialist prevented diseases from entering the city she was in as well as spreading to any connecting cities.

Remember that you're working together and not against each other, so don't hesitate to give a city card to another player when requested.

Pandemic is an absolute must have game for any family or group of people that like a challenge on all levels. This game is a little more in-depth than previous games I have mentioned, but the learning curve is not that difficult. The biggest challenge is actually remembering everything in a turn and trying to keep up with the diseases and avoid the epidemics.

Have you played Pandemic? What are your thoughts? Any tips to give new players?
